The sheepshead mushrooms usually grow during fall at the base of oak trees or on rotting oak stumps. These mushrooms can be preserved in the freezer. Since they grow wild, it is important to wash them thoroughly. The best way is to leave the mushroom in cold water for over an hour and thoroughly clean to remove mud stuck to them. Then batter the mushrooms and place on a cookie sheet and freeze them. Once frozen they can should be put into airtight ziploc bags and frozen for future use. They make great additions to many dishes such as scrambled eggs, soups, bakes, etc.
