FD&C Blue No. 1 is a food colorant used in a variety of foods including ice creams, jellies, candy, icing, and other processed foods and beverages. It is a chemical made from coal tar. It is believed that this colorant can cause the following undesirable reactions, which makes it risky for kids:

·     Hyperactivity – A study done on food colorants revealed increased levels of hyperactivity in 3-year-old children who were given these additives.

·     Allergic reaction – It can cause skin allergy, sneezing, and wheezing. It can also induce an anaphylactic reaction in rare cases.

·     Upset stomach – Abdominal discomfort including diahrrhea, constipation, and vomiting are other possible side effects.
