Ginger is a tuber that is consumed whole as a delicacy, medicine, or herb. It is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale. Other notable members of this plant family are turmeric, cardamom, and galangal. The ginger plant is distinctive in both appearance and taste. Zingiber officinale is usually about four feet tall, with long, narrow leaves that measure around seven inches long. When the plant flowers, it produces small yellow-green flowers.
