Petit fours are basically is a name given to bite-sized pastries that are mostly served after the long main course meal. Originated as a French term, the literal meaning of petit fours is “small over.” Traditionally, people of France used to bake cakes in coal-fueled ovens that burned hotter than wood-fed ovens. It was relatively hard to control the temperatures in these ovens. So, after baking large cakes, they started making small cakes to control heat remaining while the oven cooled. These were later named as petit fours.
