Hakarl is an Icelandic food that is made from Greenland shark. It is cured by allowing the shark meat to ferment under the ground and later hung to dry for several months. Hakarl is not considered good for health owing to the following reasons:

·     Greenland shark is poisonous when consumed raw. It gets safe to eat only after burying it under the ground for about six weeks.

·     It contains high amounts of uric acid.

·     Trimethylamine oxide, which is supposedly used by the shark to combat freezing in the cold waters, is bad for heart health.
